Load all map-tiles for the caches in selected database

The Forslunds 5 years ago updated by GCDroid Support 5 years ago 9

I would like to download all map-tiles around the caches/waypoints in selected database, i miss this feature after "converting" from Neongeo.

Most providers would not allow this and it is hard to determine which ones do.

Like I said above, MOBAC allows to do this on your PC. If this is wanted I can add support for a MOBAC supported format.

But loading within GCDroid will very likely not be implemented due to these issues.

If you think MOBAC support would be helpful vote for it...

This is actually something I was considering creating a suggestion for today as well. I am not sure how it fits with the licenses for different Tile servers though.

Tricky topic in terms of license but also which tile server to pick... I still think the better idea is the offline maps for this...

Not sure how it is around where you live, but where I geocache I would say in most cases the offline OSM maps isn't even close to comparable to using online OSM, Google Maps or our local maps from Lantmäteriet (for Sweden).

But as I said in my other comment, the licensing is probably not allowing this for most services. I guess OSM would allow it, their license is most likely a bit more vague on the topic.

Technically online OSM should use same data as offline OSM. You just need to find a decent map. But the source is the same. Of course there is always local options and Google ;-)

Sure, it's technically possible to build an offline OSM map that is as good as using the tile servers. But these usually don't exists. And if one wants a whole country or even a single Bundesland in Germany, the offline map file would be enormous if it were to contain the same detail level as the tile servers.

OSM is not an option in the north of sweden,
To (maybee) prevent violating the license you could disable the "download" option for the default maps in GCdroid, only enable this feature to tile-servers added by the user.

that's not that easy.... and downloading data requires many zoom levels...

but there is acutally a tool I think the name was  MOBAC (https://mobac.sourceforge.io/)

I'm sure there is one or the other format I could support... I actually had started work on that already years ago but never finished.

Neongeo did this very well, When planning an offtrack caching run where data was either sketchy or non-existent I'd download the tiles from OpenCycleMaps before leaving home, and sometimes Google Sat as well. In Neogeo the max zoom level is user selectable. Obviously this wouldn't work too well for a large database but works very well for >100 caches
